A. Beihammer
This seminar will cover the period from the seizure of
power by the emperor Basil I (867) until the years of the
last descendants of the Macedonian dynasty in the first
half of the 11th century. In order to provide a complete
picture of this period, there will be taken into consideration
both the history of the dynasty proper as well as its broader
economic and social context in the mentioned period: for
example the consolidation of the new Dynasty, the legislative
achievements of Basil I and Leo VI, military land and great
landownership, the conflict of the dynasty with the military
aristocracy of Asia Minor, uprisings during the 10th century,
the military emperors (Romanus Lacapenus, Nicephorus Phocas,
John Tsimisces) and their political program, the social
upheavals after the death of Basil II.
