ARC 612 – TOPOGRAPHY OF CONSTANTINOPLE

The seminar concerns the topography of Constantinople from its foundation up to the Fall. The topographical study of the Byzantine capital will be based on the a) written sources, b) excavated material and c) the remaining buildings today. It will be also presented the architectural evolution of the monuments together with their mural or/and mosaic decoration. The topography of Constantinople will be also examined in comparison to the urban planning of other Byzantine towns (e.g. Thessalonike). Each class involves a brief presentation of Constantinopolitan monuments, as well as an essay for the final grading.

ARC 613 ITALO-BYZANTINE PAINTING IN CYPRUS

The major seminar will deal with problems germane to the relations of the Byzantine and the Italian art. Students will become familiar with the survived icons and mural painting in Cypriot churches. The painted works of art of the venetian period (1489-1571) will be examined in comparison to analogous material of other places under the venetian rule (e.g. Crete). Visit to the Byzantine Museum in Lefkosia and to Cypriot churches with italobyzantine mural decoration.

HIS 638 ANALYSIS OF BYZANTINE OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS A. Beihammer

The objective of this lesson is to provide the students with the necessary knowledge for the scientific investigation of official documents of the Byzantine Empire. First the students will become familiar with the present state and the different kinds of tradition of archive material from the Byzantine period. Subsequently there will be discussed certain kinds of Byzantine documents with special emphasis on documents of the imperial and the patriarchal chancery. By this way the students will be enabled to carry out analysis of the internal and external characteristics of official documents as well as to use these texts as historical source.

HIS 661 - MEDIEVAL LATIN PALAEOGRAPHY

The seminar concerns the history of the survival and revival of the written works of Classical Antiquity and the Western Middle Ages, and the identification and reading of the various scripts from the fall of the Roman Empire in the West until the invention of the printing press and beyond. In addition, the seminar constitutes part of a student’s preparation for critically editing medieval works and documents. Grading is based on attendance and participation (1/3), a small critical edition (1/3) and a final exam (1/3: identification of scripts, transcription, small essay). Each class involves reading and transcription.

HIS 641 THE PERIOD OF THE MACEDONIAN DYNASTY

This seminar will cover the period from the seizure of power by the emperor Basil I (867) until the years of the last descendants of the Macedonian dynasty in the first half of the 11th century. In order to provide a complete picture of this period, there will be taken into consideration both the history of the dynasty proper as well as its broader economic and social context in the mentioned period: for example the consolidation of the new Dynasty, the legislative achievements of Basil I and Leo VI, military land and great landownership, the conflict of the dynasty with the military aristocracy of Asia Minor, uprisings during the 10th century, the military emperors (Romanus Lacapenus, Nicephorus Phocas, John Tsimisces) and their political program, the social upheavals after the death of Basil II.
