The objective of this programme is the
study of Byzantine History and Art as well as the history
and art of the Latin East, including the Byzantine Art of
the Frankish, Venetian and Turkish periods in Cyprus.
The academic staff members of the Department with specialization
in Byzantine History, Byzantine Art and Archaeology, and
Medieval European History participate in the Programme as
instructors and academic advisors. Collaborating academics
from other departments of the Faculty of Letters and other
faculties of the University of Cyprus, such as the Department
of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, the Department of
Classics and Philosophy, and the Department of Turkish Studies,
also support the Programme.
Graduates from the Department of History and Archaeology
and from the other departments of the Faculty of Letters,
as well as from similar scholarly disciplines of related
departments of corresponding faculties abroad, are considered
for admission to the GSP if the grade on their undergraduate
diploma is 7.5 or higher, and if they demonstrate knowledge
of at least two of the main European languages of academia.
At the first postgraduate level (see number 2 below) students
will be required to learn a third foreign language. Foreign
students must have sufficient knowledge of Modern Greek.
The provisions of the general Rules and Regulations of the
University of Cyprus govern the admission of students, the
approval of their course of studies, and the conferring
of degrees.
The Programme operates on two levels: the first is a two-year
curriculum and is directed toward the acquisition of the
Master of Arts degree (M.A.) in Medieval History and Art.
The second cycle of studies lasts three years and culminates
in the earning of the degree Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).
The first cycle involves the completion of eight postgraduate
classes of three credits each (8 x 3 = 24) and culminates
in the writing of a master thesis on a specific scholarly
research topic (6 units); total units: 30.
• At the end of the second semester the student declares
in writing his selection of an area of specialization in
one of the disciplines of the GSP.
• During the fourth semester the M.A. thesis topic in the
chosen area of specialization is fixed and the thesis is
written.
• The M.A. defence takes place before a three-member committee
in a public session.
The second cycle involves the participation in particular
ad hoc classes according to the requirements of the area
of specialization and culminates in the writing of a doctoral
dissertation.
The GSP functions in a way that encourages specialization
in concrete fields, as for example Byzantine History or
Byzantine Art, with a special emphasis on the History and
Art of Cyprus. The selection of courses is made according
to the specific needs of the specialization of each degree
candidate.
The Programme is incorporated into the network of collaborating
Institutions of Higher Learning in the framework of the
European ERASMUS and SOCRATES Programmes and other educational
exchange agreements made by the Republic of Cyprus.
